In combination with Clesana high-barrier film liners, Clesana toilet solutions are the only ones of their kind to offer a reliable and highly effective odour barrier. Tested and confirmed by the Fraunhofer IVV, Clesana offers a barrier that is over 800 times better than the competition.

A study by the Fraunhofer Institute compared the barrier films from Clesana with the bag films used by the competition. The requirements for the suitability of the pouch films for use in sealed toilets are high, particularly in terms of safety and durability. This is because a high barrier is not only important for the hygienic protection of users, but also for everyone in the disposal infrastructure. The Clesana bag film has an extremely low oxygen permeability and offers an oxygen barrier (odour density) that is over 800 times better than the films used by the competition.

Clesana toilet solutions utilise a unique, patented sealing mechanism. This is the only way that high-barrier film can be sealed absolutely securely and permanently in accordance with medical hygiene standards. This not only protects you, but also your surroundings. The following applies to germs, bacteria and viruses: once they fall into the Clesana, they can’t get out.

A study by the Fraunhofer Institute compared Clesana’s barrier films with the competitor’s pouch films in use. The requirements for the suitability of the pouch films for use in sealed toilets are high, particularly in terms of safety and durability. This is because a high barrier is not only important for the hygienic protection of users, but also for everyone in the disposal infrastructure. The Clesana bag film has the lowest water vapour permeability and therefore offers the best protection against the escape of liquids. It is impermeable for over 70 times longer than the film used by the competition.

Medical hygiene standards are part of Clesana’s DNA. This is because the revolutionary functional principle of the Clesana C1 is based on medical technology. Originally designed for a project by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment to protect water from contamination by drug residues, hormones and other chemicals, the Clesana system is used in clinics. Driven by this surge in innovation, the technical components have been continuously developed for use in many other areas, from caravanning to shipping, from care for the elderly and sick to civil defence, at home or far from it. As a result, the Clesana C1 fulfils even the highest hygiene requirements – so you don’t even have to ask yourself how high your standards actually are.

More about Clesana’s history.

No flushing water, no waste water, no chemical additives – with the completely waterless Clesana C1 toilet, Clesana relies entirely on dry technology. Thanks to the innovative thermo-pressure process, the system does not require any flushing water or waste water disposal. With the Clesana C1, you can help to protect one of our planet’s most important resources. You not only reduce your fresh water consumption and the energy-intensive water treatment in sewage treatment plants. Clesana also completely dispenses with the use of sanitary additives as used in conventional chemical toilets – an important step towards preserving water quality without compromising on hygiene quality. Find out more now about Function and operation of the Clesana C1.

At Clesana, we are convinced that true perfection is only achieved when things become easier. The Clesana is so easy to use that you will hardly notice any difference to your toilet at home. Except perhaps that you won’t waste any precious water. We set the standard and offer the greatest safety, the best hygiene and the highest level of comfort.

Just like at home, operating a Clesana is child’s play: big button for the big business, small button for the small business – and everything is sealed fully automatically and securely in high-barrier film. Without any water. Without chemicals. 100% odour-proof. The Clesana then automatically renews the film lining and is ready for the next visit to the toilet. The control panel of a Clesana shows you exactly when it is time to empty the drawer. You can easily dispose of the bags in the residual waste without any unpleasant contact with the bag contents.

Clesana offers the simplest disposal. The safe high-barrier bags are disposed of with household or residual waste and then converted into energy and district heating in waste incineration plants without leaving any residue. The simple disposal within the existing infrastructure also ensures a reduction in your personal carbon footprint.

Even the best wastewater treatment plant cannot filter all toxic residues from wastewater. As a result, drug residues, hormones and chemicals end up in water and soil and thus in the ecological cycle. Clesana breaks this ‘vicious circle’: the welded residues and waste can be easily disposed of in household or residual waste and then converted into energy and district heating in waste incineration plants without leaving any residue. This also prevents soil acidification and contamination. At the same time, the production of high-barrier film liners requires significantly less energy than the production of sanitary additives for conventional chemical toilets. This means that a Clesana welded toilet also leaves an outstanding impression in terms of air quality – in the form of a significantly smaller carbon footprint.

For comparison: 5 trips to the toilet* with high-barrier foil only correspond to the carbon footprint left behind by the production of 1 glass of wine (0.2 litres) or 2 bottles of beer (0.33 litres). Or a journey of 1.4 kilometres in a camper van (Fiat Ducato 130 Multijet, diesel, Euro 6**). This is innovation as we understand it: good for people, good for nature.

* 5 toilet visits corresponds to the average number of uses per person, per day ** Ø 0.263 kgCO²/km, measurement Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V., April 2021

Clesana’s mobile sanitary solution works as simply and reliably as the permanently installed toilet in your home – and completely independently of the water supply, faeces tanks and waste water pipes. Waste and toilet waste are automatically sealed in barrier film at the touch of a button and can therefore be stored for long periods of time, completely odourless and germ-free. Clesana therefore offers you the best hygiene wherever you need it: on camping trips away from supply stations, on boat trips far from harbours, in remote huts away from electricity and water networks or when caring for people for whom the journey to the toilet is simply too far. The Clesana C1 is always close at hand – and ready for immediate use even after long periods of inactivity. This is Clesana’s contribution to greater independence: really having to be able to go anywhere, anytime. Find out more now about the wide range of applications for the Clesana C1.

One of the added values of our toilet solution is that the elimination of faeces cassettes for removal via the vehicle wall gives vehicle manufacturers significantly more freedom in planning and design. This is because the Clesana C1 can be freely positioned and installed. Floor plans and room layouts can be customised accordingly. Of course, this also applies to all mechanics who want to convert their motorhome themselves.

But retrofitting is also (usually) a breeze. Thanks to the Clesana Power-Management, retrofitting can be executed quickly and flexibly in almost any installation scenario.

The operating concept of the Clesana is so simple that incorrect operation is practically impossible. The system is also particularly low-maintenance. Both during operation and when the vehicles are not in use. Winterising is not necessary and cleaning is limited to the surfaces alone. And before using the Clesana C1 for the first time, all you have to do is insert a high-barrier film liner.

e know: many people believe that environmentally conscious behaviour must go hand in hand with sacrifice. Clesana proves that sustainability and top performance can go hand in hand. The outstanding environmental compatibility of a Clesana becomes particularly clear when we consider the life cycle assessment in its entirety, i.e. from production to use and disposal. In doing so, we rely on the tried-and-tested ReCiPe* assessment method, which aims to holistically evaluate the impact of products on people and the environment. The corresponding analyses have shown that a Clesana performs significantly better than conventional chemical toilets in the four key categories of environmental impact – both in terms of climate change and with regard to soil acidification, water pollution and, last but not least, potential health risks for humans. For example, the CO2 footprint of the Clesana C1 using barrier film is already 10% lower than that of conventional chemical toilets. And we are consistently working on making our hygiene solutions even more environmentally friendly.

Incidentally, the Clesana C1 also scores highly in comparison to the dry separation toilet (TTT). The ecological footprint of a TTT is only really better if this toilet was not produced overseas and no bin liners are used for the solids.

With the Clesana C1, not only small and large transactions can be automatically sealed into individual bags in accordance with medical hygiene standards. But the Clesana C1 can do even more: in addition to the disposal of human waste, it also enables the safe disposal of potentially infectious or contaminated materials. Whether hygiene articles, leftover food, wet wipes or household waste or used protective gloves, medical dressings, animal waste or contaminated textiles – everything can be safely and aseptically sealed and disposed of without any problems. This versatility makes the Clesana C1 not only an indispensable companion for campers and travellers, but also a valuable solution for emergency services, hospitals and civil defence.

CLESANA C1 – operating principle Operating principle

We know what you might be thinking: acting with ecological awareness only comes with sacrifices. At Clesana, we prove that true sustainability and best performance are not mutually exclusive.

The outstanding eco-compatibility of our C1 toilet is shown best when comparing the overall eco-balance, from production to use and waste disposal. For this, we rely on the proven balancing method ReCiPe*, which is aimed at evaluating the impact of products on people and the environment holistically.

Corresponding studies have shown that Clesana surpasses conventional chemical toilets in all four major categories of environmental impact – including climate change as well as acidification of soils, water contamination and not least possible health risks to humans. As an example: the barriere foil technology inside Clesana’s C1 leads to a CO2-footprint 10% smaller than that of conventional chemical toilets. And we are constantly working on new sanitary solutions that are even more sustainable.

The Clesana C1 outperforms conventional chemical in all major impact categories:

1. up to 10% smaller CO2-footprint [kg CO2e] with barrier foil liner

2. up to 124% less terrestrial acidification[kg SO2e]**

3. up to 63% lower ecotoxidity in fresh water [kg 1,4-DCBe]**

4. up to 115% lower human toxidity [kg 1,4-DCBe]**

5. ca. 170l of water saved as a valuable resource

In comparsion: 5 uses*** with barrier foil equal the CO2-footprint of just the production of 1 glas of wine (0,2l) or 2 bottles of beer (0,33l) or a driving distance of 1,4 km in a camper van (Fiat Ducato 130 Multijet, Diesel, Euro 6**).

* Developed in cooperation of the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Universites of Nijmwegen and Leiden as well as analysts of the Agency for Sustainability Pré. **by residue-free burning of materials that cannot be processed by waste water plants. *** equals the average number of uses per person and day.

Incidentally, the Clesana C1 also scores highly in comparison to the dry separation toilet (TTT). The ecological footprint of a TTT is only really better if this toilet was not produced overseas and no bin liners are used for the solids.
